Project FURNACE (1957–1965) was the covert operation from which the entire Departmental lineage descends.

Launched in 1957 after a classified American Antarctic expedition detected anomalous seismic patterns, localised magnetic inversion and unnatural subglacial heat signatures. Run by the CIA Directorate of Plans.

American drilling reached Ark Chasm in 1958. Soviet probing of the same region ran concurrently under cover of the joint weather research programme VOSTOK.

Absorbed into the Special Projects Staff on its raising in 1965. Known to GRU Division P by name, and assessed by them as an independent American search for the object.
