Major General Lana Morel is the central figure of the Departmental record between 1960 and 2001.

Ark Chasm, 1960

Morel withdrew from the subterranean theatre at Ark Chasm having maintained full cognitive integrity and chain of command after fourteen days of exposure, where every previous command element had failed.

Her field log records the method. She forbade her unit from speculating on the nature of the site, instituted hourly drills to break the synchronised REM cycles the men were suffering, and ordered them to recite technical manuals aloud over the internal voice.

We are jamming the signal with banality.

The Agency assessment of her ends with a single line of recommendation: DO NOT TERMINATE.

ECHO RITE, 1972

As Colonel, Morel terminated Project ECHO RITE following three suicides in seventy-two hours, and instituted Protocol E-R/OBLIVION.

LAST LIGHT, 1983

As Brigadier General, Morel waived her own protocol in order to weaponise Tone-0V against The Beast, and commanded Operation LAST LIGHT.

She destroyed every record of the operation with her own hands on 20 November 1983.

Commandant, Site AZAZEL, 1985–2001

Morel built Site AZAZEL and then remained in it for sixteen years.

The descent log

A bound logbook is held in the AZAZEL archive, maintained in her hand, unbroken from March 1985 to November 2001. It records one recurring event.

Once a week, alone, without escort, and against the standing prohibition she had herself written, the Commandant took the Level-4 elevator down to the vault and read aloud to The Apple.

The entries are identical in form. Date, duration, document and page range. She worked through the site maintenance manuals, then the environmental handbooks, then the elevator certification schedules, then a 1974 Army field guide to cold-weather diesel maintenance, and then the manuals again from the beginning.

Eight hundred and thirty-one entries. No observation. No assessment. No stated reason.

She never explained it and was never formally asked, because the only personnel cleared to ask had read her LAST LIGHT summary and understood precisely what she was doing.

The final entry is dated 6 November 2001. It is formatted as all the others are, and it carries one additional line.
