The Office for Theological Affairs (OTA) is a joint body of DETR and the Holy See, sitting under Directorate Command.
Basis
OTA is not a Departmental directorate in the ordinary sense. It is a standing collaboration, staffed jointly by Departmental analysts and by clergy seconded from the Holy See, operating under the SAR-GREY DOVE compartment.
The arrangement exists because a substantial proportion of recovered material is religious in character and the Department has no independent competence to read it. The Holy See has archives, languages and centuries of case history. The Department has the material.
Function
Reads, translates and models recovered material of religious character. Maintains the liaison channel through which requests pass in both directions.
The Office holds no anomalies and commands no personnel. It advises Directorate Command.
Standing
Staffed at Class-C. Seconded clergy hold Departmental clearance for the duration of their posting and no longer.
