The Beast was the entity released from Ark Chasm in 1983 when The Trumpets fractured the ancient seal.
Witnesses, both direct and visionary, describe it consistently: a serpent adorned with cosmic flame, crowned in stars. The designation was assigned by the Special Projects Staff and has not been revised.
It cleared the chasm at 0417 hours and did not proceed to the surface. It remained in the upper gallery for one hundred and six days. It did not feed, move with apparent purpose, or respond to any instrumented approach.
Unmade by Operation LAST LIGHT on 12 November 1983. In its place, The Apple.
Earlier record
The Beast, or a phenomenon sharing its grammar, appears in the record long before 1983.
- 1959, Mount Qasioun. A radiant figure approximately 2.5 m in height, facial features obscured, mouthless. Reported by 84% of witnesses.
- 1959, Antarctica. A luminescent anthropomorphic silhouette in the central chamber.
- 1965, Baikonur. A winged serpent offering a luminous fruit, reported independently by eight engineers.
- 1982, Rome. A blindfolded dragon curled around an apple of glass.
The first analyst to identify the pattern as an archetype rather than a series of sightings was a Soviet officer, in a closed annex filed in 1965. See Vera Dragunova.
