Unit-01, callsign Cherubim, holds permanent responsibility for the person of the Director-General and conducts occasional direct operations on the authority of the Office of the Director-General.
Composition
Cherubim operators are unaltered by anomalous exposure. Nothing in the selection or preparation of the formation involves The Apple, and the Office has confirmed this position in writing on four occasions.
They are, instead, genetically optimised: the ceiling of what an unmodified human body can be, with no augmentation, no armour and nothing artificial in them.
The preparatory procedure is the single most expensive undertaking the Department performs on a person. The Department does not conduct it at will and has never conducted it at scale.
Faculties
Operators exhibit consistent, reproducible anticipatory perception at a range of approximately one minute. Within that window recall of events which have not yet occurred is near-total and has never been recorded in error.
Beyond one minute the faculty does not decline gradually. It ends, and what lies past it is described consistently by operators as an astigmatism: shape, brightness and direction without resolvable detail.
The practical effect is that a Cherubim is not struck. They are not durable, armoured or resistant, and a Cherubim who is struck dies as any person would. In sixty-two years no such instance has been recorded.
Command relationship
The procedure removes the possibility of compulsion. Cherubim operators are not insubordinate; they cannot be ordered, and no mechanism exists to make them.
This is documented, it has been documented since the formation was raised, and no Department body has proposed a remedy.
