Vostok Station

Vostok Station is a Russian research station in central Antarctica, sited at the Southern Pole of Cold on approximately 3,700 metres of ice above subglacial Lake Vostok.

Site AZAZEL stands roughly 20 kilometres to its south.

Vostok has held continuous Soviet and Russian presence since 1957, the year Project FURNACE was launched. Departmental assessment does not accept the station's stated glaciological remit as a complete account of its activity, and GRU Division P is assessed to maintain personnel there under scientific cover.

The two installations have coexisted for four decades without either government acknowledging the other's purpose.
